class for the non-NURSING parent
This class is tailored to the non-breastfeeding/nursing partner. This visit does not include infant feeding assessment, infant oral function assessment, infant bottle-feeding skills, nursing parent's supply, etc. The infant and the nursing parent will not be examined during this visit.
General topics covered include (but are not limited to):
what to expect in the first few hours, days, and weeks after the baby arrives;
baby hunger cues;
getting breastfeeding/lactation off to a good start;
routines, scheduling, and sleep patterns;
nursing positions and latching techniques;
understanding milk supply;
basic pumping instructions;
milk storage;
common breastfeeding problems - how to avoid them and what to do if they happen;
how to support the birthing parent; and
deciding if/when to see a lactation consultant.
This class is not covered by insurance, so it is unlikely you could get reimbursement from your health insurance company, but you can use your FSA/HSA cards.
